Flat Irons

When it comes to finding a flat iron that is safe for your hair, it’s important to find & invest in quality tools. Ultimately, the “end goal” with all heated hair styling tools is to find those that will improve the appearance of your hair while causing the least amount of damage, especially if you are already struggling with dryness and fragile tresses.

Now, before I get to our top picks, let me briefly explain a few of the most important things you want to be looking for in your next flat iron upgrade, Beauties!

Ceramic Plates, Infrared, Tourmaline, Ionic, Floating Plates, One Pass Technology…Ok, I already know what you are thinking…. 🙂

What the heck does all that mean?? Or better yet, what exactly does this mean for your hair??

Ceramic Plates

Ceramic plates are very smooth and allow for even & consistent heat distribution.

Why is this good?? First, smooth plates mean you’re not as likely to get pulls, snags, or breaks as it glides through your hair. Second, when the heat is evenly distributed, it’s less likely to cause damage since no one area of your hair gets too much heat (“hot spots”). And you don’t have to worry about “cold spots” either (where some areas don’t get straightened effectively).

The beauty in ceramic is more consistent results (NO “hot or cold spots”) and, thus, a faster styling time. Win-Win!!

Infrared Heat

Plates that use infrared heat use long wavelengths to gently heat hair from the inside out. This helps your hair maintain moisture rather than stripping it away from your hair. Lastly, infrared heat protects the cuticle and ultimately results in far less damage!

Tourmaline

Plates infused with tourmaline (a crushed gemstone) produce negative ions that allow your hair to be straightened using less heat. The negative ions neutralize the positive ions found in dry, damaged, and frizzy hair. These ions seal the cuticle, assist with hair’s moisture maintenance, and reduce both static & frizz for optimal smoothness, sleekness, and shine!

*One thing to note, ceramic plates also produce negative ions, but tourmaline produces a significantly larger amount. Also, many flat irons will add tourmaline to ceramic plates for the best of both worlds!!

Ionic Technology

If a flat iron has ionic technology, that means it uses negative ions to counteract positively charged strands (in dry hair, chemically treated hair, damaged hair, etc.). When hair has a positive charge, this causes the cuticle to open. Ionic technology helps to lock in hair’s natural moisture and close the cuticle for a smoother, shinier, frizz-free look.

*Both ceramic and tourmaline use ionic technology.

Floating Plates

Floating plates simply means the plates are made more flexible to allow for better contact and grip when straightening your hair. This helps with a more even distribution of heat. As a result, floating plates significantly cut down on your styling time and minimize your chances of damage.

One Pass or Single Pass Technology

Flat irons developed with this kind of technology allow you to straighten your hair in just one pass as opposed to having to go over a section of hair over and over again. The perks are less heat exposure (since you won’t need to go over sections quite as many times) and, thus, less opportunity for damage.

Our Top 3 Flat Iron Picks!!

We made sure to find ones that were designed with several of those essential features we just discussed, so you can get that fabulous look while cutting down on the damage!!

Here are the Top 3, ABSOLUTE BEST Flat Irons we’ve found for reaching that “end goal,” Beauties!

*Don’t forget to use a heat protectant before flat ironing your hair Beauties!!

1)FHI Heat Platform Tourmaline Ceramic Pro Styler

Why It’s Perfect: This miracle worker has three layers of ceramic plates that are infused with tourmaline while featuring adjustable heat settings & floating plates!!

The rounded edges allow for supreme versatility, as you can create a “straight as a board” look or opt for some playful curls & flips!!

I LOVE this flat iron more than any other hair tool I own (I have quite a few, so that’s saying a lot). It makes getting soft, silky hair more effortless than ever and has significantly cut down my styling time. It only takes about one to two passes to get my hair quite smooth & sleek. And it’s even worked well in NC where the humidity is absolutely awful!!!

Most of all, it never leaves my hair feeling dry. In fact, a few years back, there was one time after blow-drying that my hair felt just a tiny bit drier than I would typically like it to feel. However, I noticed that once I started straightening it with this flat iron, the dryness seemed to rather miraculously just go away!! But I’m not the only fan, according to InStyle, it’s been one of Beyoncé’s faves for some time as well!!
