In my 20’s after experiencing adult acne, skincare became a huge focal point in my life once I moved back to Los Angeles.  Eventually, my breakouts cleared up, but I could never seem to get that elusive healthy, glowing looking skin that some women out here just seemed to have naturally. 

I always wondered who these women with these annoying, flawless complexions (lol) were.  You know the ones where they’d walk into a room, and the first thing you’d notice was their skin. 

Were they born that way?  Was it something they were using?  I was always a little curious as to what exactly it was; they were doing that I wasn’t.

I eventually got my answers and my glow, quite a few years later.  As they always say, knowledge is power! 

After delving into the business side of skincare, I learned all the things I’d been missing.  With that knowledge, I made some changes, and for the first time in my life, people started commenting on my skin. 

Believe me; no one ever complimented me on my skin before.  But in recent years, now, one of the first things I hear from friends who haven’t seen me in some time is always, “Girl your skin is glowing!”…And even a few, “You’re not preggers are you??!!” (lol)

What woman doesn’t want healthy, radiant, glowing skin, am I right??  Well beauties, today’s tips will focus on a few essential ways to finally get you closer to that goal! 

It all comes down to what you use on your face, how you use it, your hydration, your nightly skincare routine, focusing on your skin type, product ingredients, and nutrition.  Are you ready for that ultimate glow power??  Let’s begin, shall we??

Tip 1: Exfoliation Is Key! 

Unless you are still quite young (early 20’s), then it is a safe bet to say your skin cell turnover has started to slow down.  When this happens, dead skin cells accumulate on your face, resulting in skin that looks rather dull and can even appear a tad gray. 

By exfoliating, you can rid your face of those piled-up dead skin cells, revealing a brighter, fresher glowing complexion underneath.  You see, exfoliation improves the surface of the skin, allowing it to become more light-reflective, which leads ultimately to that radiant glow we all want.

Exfoliants are broken down into a few categories…

  • Physical exfoliants are generally scrubs (beads, grains, salts, and sugars).
  • Chemical exfoliants are AHA’s (lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid), BHA’s (salicylic acid), retinol, and polyhydroxy acids.  AHA’s and BHA’s are better for normal to oily skin.  Polyhydroxy acids are best for sensitive skin.
  • Exfoliators also come in different formulations: peels (generally 1x a week use), cleansers (usually daily use), and scrubs (1-3x a week use).  But caution should be taken with all exfoliants; it’s vital to not over-exfoliate, which can lead to irritation.  As in, don’t use a peel, then a daily exfoliating cleanser, and then a scrub (1-2x a week) or you are asking for some seriously angry skin (inflammation, redness).  It’s best to stick to one formula, but under some circumstances, a cleanser alternating with a 1-3x a week scrub can be ok (but this depends on your skin type, concern, and product strength).  I do this kind of alternating practice, often myself.

Tip 2: Hydrate Inside & Out

Inner Hydration

Most of us don’t drink enough water and drink far too much caffeine, resulting in chronic dehydration.  When your body is dehydrated, it can manifest as a poor skin complexion: blotchiness, dryness, dullness, or more visible pronounced line and wrinkles. 

So, how much water should you really be drinking daily?  Take your body weight (lbs.) and divide it by 2.  The number you get equals the absolute minimum amount of water in ounces that you should be drinking daily.  Keep in mind that if you are physically active, you need to be drinking much more than this amount.

Outer Hydration

So now, that we know how to address the inside, what about the outside?  For outer hydration, you should use products on the skin that help it to retain moisture.  Look for ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.  Hydrated skin equals healthy glowing skin!

Tip 3: Never Go To Bed Without Washing Your Face

Yes, yes, I know you’re tired…it’s been a long day and keeping a consistent nighttime skincare routine can be hard.  But here’s why you should seriously never skip washing your face in the evening.

  • The environment contains a host of things that wreak havoc on your skin (UV rays, pollution).  How so?  Well, the free radicals that come from UV exposure and pollution lead to discoloration, an uneven skin tone, and worst of all, they ultimately damage the collagen in your skin.  This means you are courting some rather unfavorable things like dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, and saggy skin if you don’t wash nightly. 
  • Oil and dirt accumulate on your face throughout the day, which can then lead to blocked and clogged pores.  Eventually, this leads to uneven skin texture and tone.

So, do yourself a favor each night and wash that environmental grim off your lovely face before you go to sleep!  Your future self will thank you!

Tip 4: Don’t Use Products Made For The Wrong Skin Type

To help your skin’s surface glow, you should always use skincare products made for your specific skin type along with your particular skincare concern.  Using the wrong products can irritate or disrupt your skin’s moisture barrier.  And over time disrupting this moisture barrier can lead to dullness and skin that looks older than it should. 

For example, products for individuals with oily skin are not suitable for those with dry or sensitive skin.  If a person with sensitive or dry skin uses, let’s say, a sudsy cleanser made for oily skin, they end up striping essential moisture from their skin. 

When in doubt, ask for help,…it is far better to invest in the right products for your skin than to invest in products doing more harm than good.

Tip 5: Consider Products With Brightening Ingredients

Brightening ingredients help to fade discoloration and unevenness that can often create a dull appearance.  Look for products (moisturizers, serums, cleansers, toners) with ingredients like Vitamin C, Licorice Extract, Niacinamide, or Kojic Acid.

Tip 6: Give Your Complexion A Healthy Boost With Supplements

It is always best to get your vitamins and nutrients from the food you eat.  However, many of us are constantly on the go, busy, and simply short on time.  So, making sure we eat well-balanced meals can be a bit tricky sometimes.  If this is you, it may be time to add in a daily multi-vitamin…here are a few key things you should look for in your multi-vitamin along with other add-on supplements that help. 

Be sure to check with your doctor and make sure the following do not interfere with any current medications you are taking or any health conditions.  Also, for some of these, it’s essential to not exceed the daily recommended dosage (RDA) like for example iron, vitamin A, zinc, folic acid, or Vitamin B6, etc. to name a few.  Use this RDA chart as a guide.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids – (Fish Oil Supplements)

Omega 3’s are “healthy” fats that when added to your diet are a surefire way to get you glowing skin.  Not only that, they are beneficial for skin firmness and flexibility. 

These essential fatty acids help with repairing damaged skin cells, reducing inflammation, fighting the effects of UV rays, and supporting collagen production.  They also assist with improving the skin’s moisture barrier, keeping the skin’s moisture levels in check. 

Overall, they can improve your skin’s smoothness (reducing the appearance of lines), giving you a soft and supple complexion.

Vitamin C

This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from free radicals that damage the skin and aids in collagen production.  It improves skin’s firmness, assists with the repair of damaged or dry skin, and helps fight against lines, wrinkles, dullness, and dryness.

Vitamin A

Also, an antioxidant, Vitamin A is responsible for protecting your skin from damaging free radicals, like UV rays, that breakdown collagen and cause hyperpigmentation.  It helps prevent premature skin aging, assists with skin tissue repair, and fights inflammation.  Dry skin with a rough texture can be a sign of a deficiency in Vitamin A.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another antioxidant that fights free radicals, particularly UV rays, and protects your skin.  Like Vitamin C, it also helps with skin repair.  Additionally, it reduces dryness and treats inflammation.

Vitamin D

The body naturally produces vitamin D from exposure to the sun.  However, as we age, this process slows down, and our bodies are no longer able to do it quite as well.  So, a supplement can come in handy!

With folic acid, you want to aim for 400 mcg daily.  It assists in the building of new skin cells, improves blood flow (resulting in a healthy glowing appearance), assists with collagen production, helps with firmness, reduces signs of aging, and lastly, fights sun damage and discoloration.

Other B Vitamins: B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B5 (Pantothenic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine), B7 (Biotin), & B12 (Cobalamin)

The best source for these would be a multivitamin or a B-complex.  Between them, they address most every need, including the following:

Magnesium

Magnesium helps with protection from free radicals, thereby preventing signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles.  It works with fatty acids to retain moisture, skin elasticity, and to avoid dryness.  Also, it helps with inflammation that can lead to skin conditions like acne and eczema.

OPTIONAL – Omega 6 Fatty Acids

Generally, most Americans already get a lot of Omega 6 in their diets from processed foods, junk food, vegetable oil, etc.  Therefore, this one may not be necessary for most, as far as a supplement is concerned. 

The key is to keep your ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 at 2:1.  While Omega 6 is crucial for skin health, you don’t want to tip the balance and get too much of it.  So, you should focus on getting it from healthier food options, cutting out some of the unhealthy Omega 6 sources, and try to get in more Omega 3 to keep a balance. 

If you still want to give a supplement a try, it can be found in Evening Primrose Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil, and Borage Oil.  These can take about two months before you see results from using them, but they assist in the growth of healthy skin cells.  Like Omega 3’s, they are essential to your skin’s health, by fighting UV rays.  They also assist in moisturizing from within, as well as help fight signs of aging and skin damage.

If you are anything like me, you’ve probably wondered from time to time…Are there any particular foods that I should I eat for glowing skin?  Or for the overall health of my skin in general? 

What should I make sure I include on my grocery list each week to ensure I’m reaching that “glow” goal?  Well Beauties, here are some of the best options for both healthy skin and achieving glow!

Carrots:

This yummy treat is high in beta carotene, which changes to Vitamin A in our bodies.  While not as high as A, they also contain Vitamin C.  Eating carrots, therefore, protects your skin from the sun’s rays, prevents premature skin aging, aids in repairing your skin cells, supports collagen production, and can give your skin a healthy, radiant glow! 

Add some to your salad or morning smoothie.  Another option…take a few to work for a quick snack with some low-calorie dip or hummus.   

Avocados:

Yep, that’s right!  Eating this tasty treat can give you healthy, nourished skin from the inside out and a supple, gorgeous glow!  It contains Vitamins E, A, & C!!  It’s also the perfect source for good “healthy” fats, antioxidants, magnesium, B9, and B6.  With all these beneficial things combined, it helps protect your skin from signs of aging…nourishes, strengthens, plumps, and hydrates the skin! 

Some healthy options… add a bit to your morning smoothie, throw some on a salad, or spread some on a turkey burger.

Broccoli:

When I was a kid, I used to call my broccoli little trees haha ?…This is one of my favorite veggies!!  These “little trees” contain Vitamins A, E, C, zinc, iron, and calcium.  Talk about a powerful!!  Broccoli has anti-aging skin benefits, aids in repair processes, prevents dryness, helps with inflammation, assists with collagen…skin elasticity…firmness…and more!! 

I like to sauté some broccoli with carrots, garlic, onion powder, pepper and olive oil for dinner a few nights a week.  It’s a great veggie side for any meal!

Walnuts:

This delicious nut is high in Omega 3 fatty acids, not to mention a source for protein.  So, for glowing, supple, soft, plump skin, it’s a perfect option to include!  They also contain zinc, Vitamin B, and small amounts of Vitamins C & E.  What does this all mean?  Well, they fight signs of aging as well as damage to skin cells, help with cell repair, improve moisture, and combat inflammation… to name a few! 

Add some to a salad, some oatmeal, or a smoothie recipe!  I love adding them to smoothies!!! 

Tomatoes:

These big red fellas are high in lycopene, an antioxidant that fights damaging UV rays and free radicals that contribute visible skin aging (lines, wrinkles, and discoloration).  Tomatoes also have vitamin C, which helps boost collagen and prevents signs of aging like fine lines or wrinkles.  They additionally contain Vitamins A, E, and B’s (1,3,5,6 & 9). 

For healthy soft and supple skin, tomatoes are a must!  Not only that they can take dull skin and infuse it with some glow!  Cooked tomatoes will give you more lycopene than fresh ones so keep that mind.

Watermelon:

Watermelon contains a high amount of water, making it a superb food source for helping with hydration.  Not only that, it contains Vitamins C, A, B6, and lycopene to protect your skin from aging and sun damage!  So, this fruit is definitely the way to go for healthy, glowing skin ladies!

Strawberries:

Did you know strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges?  These berries are a fabulous source for Vitamin C, Folic Acid (B9), and good ole’ H2O.  In fact, they are quite high in water content, making them a viable option for added hydration.  And these beauties are also ideal for fighting signs of aging.  If you want healthy, firmer, smoother, glowing skin, these babies are what you need! 

Strawberries are a great quick snack to take to work with you or to simply add to a morning smoothie! 

Blueberries:

These yummies are packed with antioxidants, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A.  The antioxidants powerfully fight against aging skin and skin-damaging free radicals.  And of course, the Vitamin C supports the production of collagen, thus assisting with firmness & elasticity of your skin. 

To fight dullness and brighten up your complexion, add blueberries to a smoothie or some cereal and start your day off right!

Papaya:

This tropical option is a superfood full of antioxidants, Vitamins (C, A, B, & E), magnesium, and calcium.  You might be surprised to find out that like strawberries, papaya also has more vitamin C than an orange. 

Beauties, if you are all about that glow, give papayas a try!  They prevent inflammation, support collagen, fight free radicals, improve skin’s overall health, and help prevent signs of aging.

Sweet Potatoes:

Like Carrots, they contain high amounts of beta carotene, which turns into Vitamin A.  Vitamin A helps with dryness and promotes a smooth complexion through tissue repair processes.  They also have Vitamins C and B6.  Lastly, they have small amounts of calcium, iron, zinc, and Vitamin E. 

How about you ditch the usual potatoes or fries and give sweet potatoes a go??!!

Spinach:

Spinach is a marvelous source for Vitamins A, C, E, B6, iron, calcium, folic acid, and magnesium.  This veggie will give you healthy, vibrant, glowing skin for sure! 

Try a spinach salad with strawberries, blueberries, walnuts, and a vinaigrette dressing (get several in at once)!  Or you can always throw some spinach in a smoothie with fruit!

Pomegranate:

This delicious fruit is full of healthy vitamins and minerals: Vitamin C, Iron, and zinc, to name a few!  They assist with blood flow and circulation, thus, giving you a warm radiant glow.  Plus, they help with the growth of healthy new skin cells.

Coconut Water:

Ok, technically not a food, but I couldn’t leave this one out because not only does it provide hydration, but it contains magnesium, calcium, and Vitamin C! 

This is a satisfying option if you want an alternative to drinking water all day.  Drink it solo or add it to a smoothie!
