A Quick Recap: The Best Eyeshadow Colors For Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes can change their color and look different from day to day….sometimes more green, other times a light brown, amber, or even golden. And every pair of hazel eyes is unique, to say the least!

Now, in our previous article, “Eyeshadows For Hazel Eyes: Most Flattering Makeup Finds!” we covered the best colors and a few palettes for all you hazel-eyed Beauties out there.

But here’s a quick recap!! — For a more detailed explanation, check out the article above.

When it comes to selecting eyeshadow shades, the first step is deciding if you want to enhance your natural eye color or make them pop.

To enhance their natural beauty, it’s as simple as deciding which hues you want to highlight that day! So, for example, you could take your pick of various warm, earthy browns, greens, or gold eyeshadows. Additionally, you should look into metallics like bronze or copper.

Now, if you want to make them pop, that involves using basic color theory. Since red and purple fall opposite green and yellow in the color wheel, the best options to make them stand out are going to be purple and red-based eyeshadows.

*** A shout-out to all the fabulous makeup artists who created some of these to-die-for looks! ***

Disclaimer: (Please Note The Following) Some of the recommended products listed in this post were not the specific ones used in the creation of these looks. These are, however, my suggestions as a professional makeup artist on the best products one can use to recreate them or something very similar. There are, however, a few products recommended that were, in fact, used for a few of the looks.

Red-Based Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

When it comes to hazel-eyed makeup, red is always a fantastic choice. The color red is complementary to green, which means if your hazel eyes lean more green, it will draw attention to their greenish tones. If you have hazel eyes that lean more amber or light brown, then eyeshadow looks that incorporate red will help to emphasize their firey warmth.

Don’t get intimidated by reds. You have options! You can go with a more conventional flush of color or something more statement-making. And red-based shades can span from rose to rust, burgundy, raspberry, pink, or cranberry.

Edgy & Rapturous Shades Of Red (Look #1)

Natalia_A/Shutterstock.com

Unleash your confident, edgier side with rapturous reds! A vivid red eyeshadow look is all you need to bring out the intoxicating green hues in your hazel eyes. While it appears to be a single shade, this look actually blends a few different shades of red, from deep ruby to a slightly coral-red and a deep pink focused on a portion of the lower lash line.

The key to this type of eye makeup is to build the color up slowly. Don’t forget to add several coats of mascara, and if you prefer a more subtle approach, opt for sheer red glossy lips (as opposed to an opaque gloss)!

Warm & Autumnal (Look #2)

We all know how hazel eyes can take on a warm golden hue when playing with bold autumnal colors, so go ahead and embrace it! Using eyeshadow in burgundy with shimmery copper, you can create a look that sets hazel eyes ablaze!

The copper will draw out the beautiful brown around your pupil. While burgundy has a way of intensifying the swirls of green in the outer iris. Tie it all together with purple liner applied to your lower waterline and lashes for the total eye-popping effect!

Eggplant, Burgundy, Metallic Rust (Look #3)

This smokey eye demonstrates how two red-based eyeshadows combined with purple can create a sizzling look that’s to die for! Burgundy and metallic rust wrapped around the eye create a breathtaking contrast against hazels. While eggplant tones on her inner upper lid show off the bursts of gilded gold in her eyes.

Concentrate the rust shade on the lid and carry it onto your lower lash line. Sweep the burgundy into your crease, blending upward and outward.

Cranberry & Rust Metallic (Look #4)

woman with hazel eyes and a red eyeshadow look

Don’t you just love this look??!! This makeup is flawless!!! The combination of red-based shades beautifully plays off the subtle hints of green in her eyes. It accentuates the deeper green outer ring of her iris.

Complement this look with a lip from the same color family for a harmonious effect, and you’ll find every aspect of this style to be utterly captivating.

Effortless With Rust & Soft Peachy-Gold (Look #5)

woman with hazel eyes and beautiful eye makeup

Bring out the richness of your hazels with metallic rust and soft peachy gold! Start with a sweep of the soft peachy-gold across the lids. This color will enhance the golden tones within the iris and add a radiance to your overall look.

Follow with a smooth application of metallic rust eyeshadow on the outer 2/3rds of your lid, blending outwards. This will help to highlight the green hues in your eyes. For the lower lash line, use the peachy gold on the inner third of your eye with the rust on the outer 2/3rds.

Lastly, the addition of a few swoops of mascara and a swipe of gloss will give your face a beautiful, airy finish in no time at all! Try a glittery gloss like this one from Pat McGrath.

Purple Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

Looking to make a statement with your eyeshadow? Purple is the color for you! This royal hue can really make hazel eyes stand out, and there are plenty of different ways to wear it. Not to mention, it’s a color that works with every skin tone!

Smokey Lush Lavender (Look #6)

There’s simply nothing more alluring than a lavender smokey eye look! It’s the perfect hue for those with hazel eyes and a great way to add some vibrance to your makeup routine.

Just be sure to blend the shadow well so there aren’t any harsh lines. Bronzed cheeks and matching lavender lips will tie this look together and give you a transcendent beauty worthy of any goddess! 😍

Perfectly Purple Halo (Look #7)

This makeup look gives hazel eyes an extra dose of eye-popping drama without going overboard. Using a combo of deep aubergine purple with pink and mauve tones from the Mini Love Palette, you can create an ethereal halo-like shape around your eyes.

Other products you’ll need:

Blushing Berry W/ Purple Passion (Look #8)

This one’s for those who love to experiment with colors! When used together, a bright berry shade paired with a deep purple can intensify your hazel-green eyes! It’s a great way to show off their brilliant yellow and golden hues while also playing up hints of green!

To keep your eyes in full focus and balance out that vibrant and colorful shadow, try keeping your lips and cheeks tastefully understated and glowy. Then add some black liner to enhance the shape of your eyes with wispy lashes or mascara to set it off!

Pink & Purple Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

Colorful eyeshadow has a way of transforming your look almost instantly. Both pink (a red-based color) and purple together make for a match made in heaven! Let’s take a quick look at the color wheel, Beauties!

Pink and purple fall next to each other on the color wheel, which means they share a common hue. Ultimately, this is what makes them coordinate with one another so well. In fact, this is a core strategy I go over in the Master Your Eyeshadow Guide for pairing your eyeshadow shades.

Pretty In Pink + Purple Twist (Look #9)

Pink and purple eyeshadow looks have been popping up everywhere lately, and they’re an eyeshadow trend we can’t ignore! Each on its own can offer a dynamic pop of color that will make hazel eyes truly stand out. But together, they create a seriously game-changing look! To recreate this look, you’ll need the Love Face Eyeshadow & Cheek Essential Palette.

Bold Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

Sometimes, we all need an extra boost in our makeup game. If you’re looking to make a “bolder than bold” statement or love bright eyeshadow looks, these next eyeshadow ideas for hazel eyes are totally on-trend!!

Vivid Green Liner Pop (Look #10)

woman with hazel eyes and a bold eyeshadow look

For those of you looking to incorporate colorful liners, this look will animate your hazel peepers in a flash! Aside from using eyeshadow for the smokey eyes, we recommend that you keep the rest of your makeup relatively minimal so nothing competes with your lids.

Try a palette like the Lorac PRO Meraki with its assortment of black, browns, and soft metallics for the eyeshadow. Then, use a neon green pomade for that electrifying wing!

Reverse Cat-Eye Glam (Look #11)

woman with hazel eyes and beautiful makeup

Shimmery eyeshadow & lashes paired with a dramatic reverse cat-eye to the max create a winning contrast! While this look doesn’t feature the typical best shades for hazel eyes, we couldn’t leave it out! Why? Well, we’re simply obsessed with it!!

Chocolatey Smokey Eye (Look #12)

woman with hazel eyes and a smokey eyeshadow look

A deep, dark chocolate smokey eye never hurt anybody, and it can be especially beautiful on hazel eyes. For this look, use a mix of deep dark brown eyeshadow, black liner, and fab lashes to create a delectable eyeshadow look worthy of sporting on a night out or red-carpet affair!

Light Blue Pop With With Feline Twist (Look #13)

If you’re looking for an ultra-dramatic look that still highlights your hazel eyes, we have just the one for you! This Fox-eye look is a real game-changer with its unique combination of colors.

Begin by applying a sparkly champagne shadow on your lids and inner corners. This will immediately illuminate your eyes. Next, apply a light blue liner on your waterline. The blue will create a stunning contrast with the warmth of your hazels.

To give your eyes that signature fox-like elongation, use a black liner on your inner corners and wing it out on the ends. This creates an illusion of a more extended and more lifted eye shape.

Don’t be afraid to really extend that wing and make a statement. To finish, add some bold lashes, and you’re guaranteed to make your hazel eyes the star of the show!

Multiple Stacked Wings (Look #14)

woman with a magenta eyeshadow look and winged eyeliner

Showcase your makeup skills with complementary hues and a stacked-winged look! The beauty of all the latest eyeliner trends is that you can get super creative. A liquid liner with a precise tip will work best to keep it crisp and sharp.

Magenta (a red-toned purple) & mustard hues play up hazel eyes unexpectedly! What’s most captivating is how the mustard shadow used on her eyes brings out the light, coppery brown tone right outside her pupils.

After applying your eyeshadows and creating your wings, complete the look with several swipes of volumizing & lengthening mascara for thick, larger-than-life lashes.

Bright Pink & Graphic Liner (Look #15)

woman with hazel eyes and a pink eyeshadow look
Serg Zastavkin/Shutterstock.com

We couldn’t make a roundup of eyeshadow looks without including this gem! If you’re ready to take a daring makeup leap and go full-on pink, you should definitely give this a go! Try this look with a bold matte pink on your lids and under your lash line.

Then, add a wing using a black liner to enhance the shape of your eyes and elongate them for a sleek feline look. Bring the outer end of your wing inward towards your crease to create a fun graphic shape.

Line your lower lash line with a waterproof black liner and add some mascara or luxurious false lashes for extra depth. Then voila…You’re ready to turn some heads!

Earthy Browns & Metallic Eyeshadow Looks

Some of the best eyeshadow looks to accentuate the natural richness of hazel eyes rely on warm, earthy tones. For example, warm browns like chestnut, cinnamon, pecan, terracotta, clay, sienna, etc.

Generally, brown eyeshadows will bring out the warmth and depth of your hazel eyes as they pick up the distinctive darker tones in your iris.

Now, bronze, gold, and copper eyeshadows will also bring out their warmth, but bronze and gold will highlight the golden flecks in your iris. By contrast, for some, copper eyeshadow will intensify the coppery-brown tones in your eyes.

Warm & Muted Sun-Kissed (Look #20)

Need something flirty and light enough to work for everyday wear? This makeup look will be a smash! Incorporating warm brown shadows for a muted sun-kissed effect, it gives off a stylish & polished vibe without going overboard!

Add a touch of liner to define your eyes and give the illusion of a dense upper lash line. Depending on your skin tone, add a warm brown, tawny, or burnt rose blush with a rosy nude lip. Then bask in all your natural glam glory! 😉

Polished Gold (Look #21)

woman with hazel eyes and a gold eyeshadow look

Amp up the glimmering golden flecks in your eyes with an equally bright and vivid gold!! Using the darker colors to contour at the crease and outer corner, with gold on your lid and inner eye area, creates just the right touch of depth and dimension to the eyes.

Add rosy nude lipstick with a warm, rosy blush, and it will easily work for a date night or any time you want to look your best!

Toasty Brown & Sugary Shimmer (Look #22)

woman with hazel eyes and a beautiful brown and shimmery eyeshadow look

Brown with a touch of shimmer can be utterly sublime! You’ll need to use a warm brown shade and pair it with a wash of shimmer like this Master Crystal Reflector (Bronzite).

Add a creamy coral-rose blush for a natural radiance & irresistible glow. Then apply a black or dark brown liner like this one from Nars and a few coats of mascara or lashes, if you prefer, to finish it off!

Bronzed Metallic (Look #23)

woman with hazel eyes and a bronze eyeshadow look

Ready to unleash your inner goddess? Honestly, nothing says “goddess” quite like glowing skin and glimmering eyes do! Blended and smoked out to perfection, bronze eyeshadow can look ravishing with hazel eyes. Nude glistening lips and highlighted cheeks are the perfect compliments!

Coppery Seductress (Look #24)

woman with hazel eyes and a copper eyeshadow look

Don’t be afraid to embrace metallics; they’re the quickest way to make your hazel eyes come to life, ladies! And if smoldering seductress is what you’re going for, this makeup is all you need! To get a similar look, decorate your lids with exquisite coppery hues from the Natasha Denona Bronze Eyeshadow Palette.

Metallics, Pink, & Warm Browns (Look #25)

If you think brown is boring, this look proves that nothing could be further from the truth. Combined with metallics and pink, you can create an absolute masterpiece!!

This look is a fabulous way to add a little contrast and make hazel eyes pop with pink while simultaneously enhancing their natural beauty with warm orange-brown and gilded gold. We love how this makeup instantly lights up her hazels!

Taupe & Glimmer (Look #26)

This spellbinding eye makeup look, although devoid of typical metallics like gold, bronze, or copper, is so striking that we simply couldn’t exclude it. It flaunts two shades of taupe, a silverlike brown, and a nude pink from Natasha Denona’s I Need A Nude Eyeshadow Palette.

Silver-toned eyeshadow, grandiose in the chicest way, exhibits an icy contrast against the warm tones of hazel eyes. On your upper lash line, create a wing with black liner, then coat your lashes with mascara for a knockout finish!

Soft & Glam Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

Soft glam makeup strikes a great balance between dramatic, full glam makeup and more natural looks. But what about hazel eyes? What are some soft glam eyeshadow looks that work best with this unique eye color? You’re in for a total treat with these next three ideas! Not only are they soft glam, but they’re just the thing for dreamy date nights!

Rosey Taupe Glam (Look #28)

Bring the romance and never be forgotten with a makeup look like this! Swoonworthy rosey tapes and neutrals are all you need to complete it! If you’re in need of a “go-to” look for a romantic evening out, why not dress up your lids with an understated rose-gold approach? A sheer sweep of rose gold on your lids adds a lovely touch of warmth to your overall look.

Using a soft brown liner, start at the inner corner of your eye and extend towards the outer corner, creating a wing that follows the natural curve of your lash line. This not only accentuates the shape of your eyes but also gives them depth and dimension.

Finish off with a coat of volumizing mascara for the perfect blend of subtle sophistication and glamour, ideal for both day and night wear.

Green Eyeshadow Looks For Hazel Eyes

For individuals with hazelnut-colored eyes, green eyeshadow can be the ideal complement. It instantly emphasizes their natural beauty and makes them even more distinct than they already are!

Mossy Olive Green (Look #30)

This dramatic eyeshadow look is a striking pick for an evening out or a special event! It’s just the right amount of mossy green boldness to bring out the deep green outer ring of her hazel eyes while also highlighting the yellow and lighter green hues!

While the pewter brown shadow enhances the medley of brown-toned flecks around her pupil. We recommend keeping this look “all about the eyes” with nude lips and minimal blush. You’ll need Huda Beauty’s GloWish Micro Mini Natural Eyeshadow Palette to recreate this eye makeup.

Iced Forest Green Glam (Look #31)

woman with hazel eyes and a green eyeshadow look

A look like this is killer if you want to play up the many glimpses of green found in your hazel eyes. If your eyes have a dark green tone at the outer edge of your iris (or a dark green outer ring), then a deep shade like forest green is an excellent choice! Paired with subtle mauve lips and shimmering silver eyeshadow, it’s the perfect party-ready makeup look!

Green With Gold (Look #32)

woman with hazel eyes and a green and gold eyeshadow look

We love this green and gold eyeshadow combo for gals with either hazel or light brown eyes. Using an emerald green on your upper lid is a fantastic way to enhance your eyes’ natural green tones. Gold placed at the inner eye area (top and bottom) instantly draws attention to the yellow and golden tones in your eyes.

Makeup FAQs For Hazel Eyes:

What color eyeliner is best for hazel eyes?

Like eyeshadow, you have quite a few options as far as eyeliner for hazel eyes. You can always go with black, warm browns, gray, or taupe gray for a more traditional shade. But if you want to play with more color options, try green, purple, rust, burgundy, mauve, gold, or bronze.

How do you make hazel eyes look bigger?

There are several ways to make your hazel eyes appear larger; here are a few of our favorites…

  • Use an eyeliner that matches some of the tones in your iris, like brown, green, or gold.
  • Curl your lashes and use mascara, as this lifts and opens the whole eye area up.
  • Consider adding a touch of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes.
  • Keep darker shades on the outer portion of your eyes, and use light shades on the inner section.
  • Avoid dark eyeliner in your waterline, and use a nude liner there instead.

How can I make hazel eyes brighter?

A quick way to brighten up hazel eyes, or any eye color, for that matter, is to use pearlescent eyeshadow shades. Much like a highlighter, it captures the light and gives the illusion of more brightness. You can try a sheer wash of a solo color on your lids, add it just to your inner and outer corners, or even go entirely around the eyes.

A second way that’s just as effective if you don’t want to use a holographic-like eyeshadow is to go with metallics or glitters. For example, a look like this (see below image), created with Too Faced Cosmetics (Pretty Rich Diamond Light Eyeshadow Palette), is superb for brightening up your hazel eyes.

The key is strategically placing a bright gold metallic shadow above and below your iris ONLY. Nestling your iris in between the gold in this way will bring all attention to your eyes and help to bounce reflected light off them beautifully.

  • Use the gold shadow (Fluent In Diamonds) on your eyelid directly in the center and below your lash line (also directly center).
  • Use the peachy gold shade (Don’t Carat All) on both the inner 1/3 and outer 1/3 of your lid.
  • You can also apply a bit under the outer portion of your lower lash line.
  • Then, depending on your complexion, go with a matte shade like It’s Cashmere or Oh That’s Rich for your crease.
